I’ve always had this useful product in the barn. I’ve used Phillips Milk Of Magnesia (mint flavor) especially as an emergency treatment in a case of colic when there are no other drugs on hand and where there is no immediate veterinarian service available. I administer this product orally using a “Dose syringe” about 2oz. of it. I have often given the horse more, if the situation didn’t get better within an hour. Of course he went on the trailer and to the hospital if possible.

I have used this product in horses that have had tendencies to tie up. In some cases it made a 100% difference, as in some cases it was less effective. I gave one to two ounces about one hour before race/exercise. I’ve used Milk of Magnesia in racing/training many times and often with positive/expected results. I have noticed no side effects.

For human use:
What is milk of magnesia?

Milk of magnesia is a saline type laxative. This means that the magnesia acts to pull a salt or saline solution into the intestines from the blood. This excessive fluid then provides a flushing or laxative action within the intestines.

What is it used for?

This preparation is useful for the temporary relief of constipation. It can also be used for indigestion or heartburn, but the diarrhea side effect usually limits its use in people.
